\n Original c1913 nicholas briganti (1861-1944) venice canal architecture oil painting
this is just a great original piece. I have had one other nicholas briganti painting in the last few years but it was one of his local new bedford scenes. Though he is known for those, his most desirable paintings are the ones he did of venice. That is what this one is. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful view of the boats in a canal in venice as well as some of the architecture in the city. Oil on canvas measuring 20 x 14 inches. Signed lower right corner. Painting is in very good condition. There is a layer of surface grime that could definitely be easily cleaned. If so, the colors would really pop off the canvas. The top 1\/3 of the painting in the sky shows some minor craquelere that is not that big of a deal and very stable. Really just a beautiful painting as it is. In its original gold thick molded frame that shows some minor loss but nothing too bad. On the back of the frame is a partial label from when this originally sold. Based on the label being in english, I am guessing this was sold at a gallery here in america and not in europe. Frame measures 26 1\/2 x 21 1\/2 x 3 inches.<\/p>\n

For those not familiar with the artist his biography from askart reads: “Active in New Bedford, Massachusetts between 1893 and 1897, Nicholas Briganti painted luminous landscapes of bucolic scenes as well as figure and human activity. His name is often confused with Nicholas Brigante (1895-1989) of California, modernist, abstract painter. Briganti exhibited at the New Bedford Art Club and his work is in the New Bedford Free Public Library. He taught drawing at the New Bedford Business University.”
