Antique acrylic old masters painting after German artist Heinrich Vosberg’s “Einsam und Verlassen,” which translates to “Alone and Forsaken,” and is commonly titled “Alone.” The original painting was completed in 1887 and depicts a young, rosy-cheeked girl sitting in a boat in an otherwise empty body of water under the light of a full moon.

The mood is quiet and introspective, and the delicate, fine details of this original reproduction painting are more appreciated the closer you get. The asymmetrical composition of this rendition is unique in that it extends the water and horizon line further out on the right so that the subject is on the lower left side of the painting. The original painting as well as other reproductions place the subject more in the center, without the same expanse of water and atmosphere.

The frame is original to the painting, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, by the advertisement found on the inside of the cardboard backing. It reads ‘Julius Kayser & Co New York’. JK & Co was the largest silk glove and underwear manufacturer, getting its start in 1879 in New York. Original eyelet screws hold a newer hanging wire.

The painting is unsigned. Still, the lovely composition, mood, and artistry it portrays, coupled with a thoughtfully matched frame with subtle waves like the water depicted, emanates beauty and mystique that stands alone.

moreGood vintage condition with the following flaws: There are a few tiny, pin-sized nicks in the painting towards the top of the frame within the sky, and one subtle white scratch to the left of the moon. The wood frame is sturdy and solid, but the paint is worn in some places where the wood underneath shows through. The original sealed paper backing has been removed, and the painting is secured inside the frame with cardboard and framing nails. less
