Rare Blendon Reed Campbell Covered Bridge Winchester Nh Winter Monotype Painting

This is just a great original piece. I had a painting by blendon reed campbell many years ago. I have seen some of his scribners cover posters around as well but never had one. When I saw this work, I was very excited to be able to purchase it. For those not familiar with blendon campbell I have included his biography below. In doing research I was able to find one other monotype by the artist but that was in a museum. This is a stunning winter view of a covered bridge and farm in new hampshire. Truthfully, I believe it is one of the artist’s finest work. The details and snow are so realistic. Monotype measures 9 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches and is in pretty close to perfect condition. Outstanding original color. Signed, titled, and notated in pencil below the image. Really just a stunning one of a kind by the artist. In original french matte and frame that make me believe this work dates to around the 1940s or 1950s. The matte shows some water staining along the left side and should be replaced. Really the work is so great it really should be archival framed and then it would be a truly great 20th century american work. Frame measures 16 1/2 x 19 inches.

For those not familiar with the artist his biography from askart reads: “Blandon Reed Campbell, born in 1872, produced a body of work as divergent as a colorful oil on canvas of dancing nymphs to work as dark in color and mood as his Depression-era “Derelict, N.Y.,” 1933. A line of darkly-dressed, Depression-caused derelicts sit amidst garbage along a wooden fence diagonally retreating into the painting, with buildings and newly-washed clothes drying beyond. Posters on the fence advertise fun at “Coney Island” and an automobile offering “speed” and “comfort” for $450, low to us today, but as far away as the moon for these unemployed. Campbell painted a series of nymphs in the 1930’s, in the depths of the Depression perhaps to much the same effect as escapist Shirley Temple films and other movie musicals. Campbell studied in Paris with Laurens and Constant at the Academie Julien and later with Whistler. He was a prize-winning artist in venues ranging from the Paris Salon in 1899 through numerous exhibitions ending in 1949. His work hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., and Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The long-lived artist died in 1969.”
