The book explores the connections between cities and people with storytelling but is very visual.
This work recounts the now mythical story of French poets, painters, and writers (many of them Jewish) who escaped from Paris to Marseille after the surrender of France in 1940. From Marseille, they were smuggled overseas through the efforts of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescues Committees.
This is how André Breton and his entourage arrived in New York in 1941 and launched Surrealism in America.
A wonderful documentation of that story, with text both in French and English, and superb illustrations.
