Vintage Design
The cabinets are veneered in highly figured quartered book match maple, as well as line inlaid and crossbanded maple on all sides. with the original celluloid drops and brass handles.
The cabinets have loose glass tops fitting neatly into a simple gallery back. These are in very good condition.
The craftsmanship of these pieces is demonstrated by its construction – made in solid mahogany throughout, with the distinctive veneer over. It would have been made by a high end firm, probably Whytock and Reid. Gillows also used Langbear cabinet locks in the 19th Century. This chest was purchased in Scotland, where the renowned firm Whytock and Reid would have also used these locks around the time this was made. This firm furnished the great houses and castles of Scotland, often working in partnership with the architect Robert Lorimer.
The drawer linings are also made in solid mahogany, with handmade dovetail construction. All the drawers work well, and are clean on the inside. There is a small mark to the interior of one top drawer. Each drawer is full length.
Overall in excellent clean condition with a lovely colour, they have been sympathetically re-finished by hand, and still retain a few very light authentic marks to highlight their genuine heritage. One of the chests has had shrinkage gaps to both sides, one side more noticeable than the other, as shown in the photographs. These have been filled. A couple of the drawer bases have also opened slightly and these have been filled.
Please see also listed a similar chest of drawers.
