Émile Gallé, the founder of the School of Nancy, is unanimously recognized as one of the instigators of the vast international movement for the renewal of the decorative arts during the last twenty years of the 19th Century that gave birth to Art Nouveau. But Gallé is not only an outstanding master glassmaker and ceramist, nor an esthete sensitive to “end of the century” decay. He also lived intensely through the difficulties of his time.
This book deals with economic difficulties because Emile Gallé runs a company subject to competition and the machine’s development. It also talks about aesthetics to reconcile art and industry.
The sociological chapter explains how art becomes accessible to the masses. Finally, it places the work of Gallé in the political context of his time with the German occupation of the regions of Alsace and Lorraine and the Dreyfus affair.

Ruhlmann, Genie de l’Art Deco (Ruhlmann Art Deco Genius), a special edition of the French magazine L’estampille, L’Objet d’Art published during the exhibition at the Musee Des Années 30 in Boulogne Billancourt, France in 2002.
In November 1933, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann left the artistic scene prematurely, not without marking the style of his time.
In 1934, in the booklet published for the retrospective exhibition of his works, at the Pavillon de Marsan, Frantz Jourdain and Pierre Patout, his friends, paid him a final tribute. They want the furniture pieces of the prestigious modern decorator, so full of taste, originality, elegance, harmony, and technical perfection, to join the works of Riesener in the Louvre. Nothing came of it, and despite his friend’s wish, Ruhlmann experienced purgatory, the fate of many great artists.
If the chariot furniture won the Louvre by bequest of Marguerite Ruhlmann in 1959, the one that would become one of the symbols of Art Deco, just like Poiret for haute couture, Dupas for painting, Janniot for sculpture, no longer had the honors of a single exhibition.
In the mid-1960s, renewed interest in the period revived its name, but the time for museum recognition had not yet come.
We want to correct this injustice, in a way, today by presenting, thanks to the collection of his archives at the Museum of the 1930s, this exhibition entitled “Ruhlmann, a genius of Art Deco” in French public collections.

1925, which only raised sarcasm yesterday, softened suddenly. We say retro for the fiftieth anniversary of the Decorative Arts. OK, go retro!
Joséphine Baker, Charlot, la Violettera, bell bottoms, the threepenny franc, and Valentino reappear in our mythology. Einstein’s surrealism, Picasso the Augustus and Cocteau the White Clown, Stravinsky, and Freud, have not left her. With the lamé shirt dress, the girl finds the make-up of the lower eyelid, this dark circle, of her mother, the Garçonne. Van Dongen goes back to the Hôtel Drouot.
“We descended towards 1939 as 1900 descended towards 1914, sliding into the abyss as if in a pleasure,” wrote Paul Morand, the magician of 1900. We do not yet know what we are descending, and we do not descend there cheerfully these are the only notable differences” AL.

This first edition of the book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, co-produced with the Center de Création Industrielle and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, presented from February 21 to April 22, 1985.
This exhibition book presents a panorama of various architectural trends from 1968 to 1985, in Europe and the United States, through the collections of the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, inaugurated in 1984. It is also an extension of the event Images et Imaginaires d’Architecture presented at the Center Pompidou by the CCI in 1984.
This book takes up the outline of this exhibition which presents a panorama of various architectural trends from 1968 to 1985, in Europe and the United States, through the collections of the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, inaugurated in 1984. It is also an extension of the Images et Imaginaires d’Architecture event presented at the Center Pompidou by the CCI in 1984.
A set of around 200 original drawings, 35 models, and a few paintings and sculptures bear witness to a new plurality of research and the current proliferation of architectural creation.
This panorama reflects through some forty projects (nearly half of which were finished), many recent currents, and not just postmodernism.

Jacques Callot 1592 – 1635, French book by Paulette Choné, 1992.
This important book was published on the occasion of the Jacques Callot exhibition presented at the Lorraine Historical Museum, in Nancy, from June 13 to September 14, 1992.
For the fourth centenary of the birth of Jacques Callot, his native town paid homage to him. The exhibition at the Lorraine Historical Museum was a great first in terms of size and appeal.
The famous engraver was also one of the greatest draftsmen of the seventeenth century. Among his most famous artworks, we can cite, the Caprices and the Fair of Impruneta, the Temptation of Saint Anthony, and the characters from the Commedia Dell’Arte, the Bohemians, and the Miseries of War.
The confrontation of hundreds of prints with two hundred and fifty sketches, less known to the public, lent by museums in Europe and America, reveals the diversity of this master of comedy and tragedy.
This catalog was edited for a major international exhibition of Callot’s graphic production, with seventeen essays by as many authors, including Maxime Préaud, Jean-Marc Dupluvrez, Pierre Béhar, Alain Larcan, and Paulette Choné. Some 500 prints and 200 drawings are presented, arranged by topic and chronologically.

About the author:
Paulette Choné (born in Briey in 1948) studied philosophy and history at the University of Nancy (1965-1969), where she was a student of Raymond Ruyer and René Taveneaux. She obtained the CAPES in philosophy and taught this discipline at the Teacher Training College of Montigny-Les-Metz, then Maxéville. A resident of the French Academy in Rome (Villa Medici) from 1980 to 1982, she was elected lecturer in the history of modern art (1989) and then professor (1998-2010) at the University of Dijon.
Her teaching and research focus on European artistic and intellectual life in the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly in Lorraine.
