Thomas Allom, artist, architect and draughtsman studied at the Royal Academy School, London. He was a founder member of the royal Institute of British Architects. He is chiefly known for the numerous topographical works, which were used to illustrited books on travel. Allom drafted a wide variety of views of China, from the well known sites and monuments, to scenes of silk cultivation, religious ceremonies and battles at sea.

The studies were finely engraved on steel plates and published by Fisher & Son in 1843, entitled China in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architect and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire for both the English and French markets.
